So you want to be a developer.
But you don’t have thousands of dollars laying around for training, and those “teach yourself” books just don’t work for you?
No sweat. There are two initiatives that have just recently launched that can help you out…
The first is the Code Year project. Their site says it all:
“Make your New Year’s resolution learning to code. Sign up on Code Year to get a new interactive programming lesson sent to you each week and you’ll be building apps and web sites before you know it. “
There are some solid names behind this initiative, so give it a look out at their site: http://www.codeyear.com/, and you can read about them in this article from CNN.com as well.
The next comes from our friends at MEDC. You know we’ve taken part in a few of the Shifting Gears programs, trying to help people by talking through our Ten Commandments of Networking. Well, now they’re launching Shifting Code, which is specifically targeted at helping people learn how to be developers.
Now, cards on table…this one isn’t free, but it’s only $100 to participate. Not too bad.
Apparently their first dive in will be with Drupal. You can check out the details on their site: http://www.mitalent.org/Michigan-Shifting-Code/
Oh, and while you’re there, you can register for a chance to have lunch with Governor Snyder over at http://www.mitalent.org/Lunch-With-Governor-Snyder/:
Three job seekers and three employers will be chosen to have lunch with the governor. In addition, winning job seekers will receive complimentary career coaching, career transition training and $250 for new interview attire while the winning employers will get iPad 2s.
…or, you know, the iPad2 and other stuff might be nice.
