The internet is abuzz with the latest breach that revealed customer data, Charlie Sheen thinks you might really be that dumb, we’ve got a ton of jobs and some great discussions sitting in our LinkedIn group, there’s a Pink Slip Party just two weeks away, we got feedback galore about your thoughts on event sponsors…
…yeah, it’s been busy around here.
So let’s dive on in and get started…
Let’s start with what at least one of our LinkedIn group members has referred to as a “teaching moment”. Yes, we all know about the breach (and if you don’t…seriously? Turn in your geek card.) that has companies across the world sending notification emails to customers that their data has been taken by as-of-yet-unknown thieves. To be clear, it appears that two pieces of data were absconded with:
- Email addresses
- Names. Some partial (first name only), some full (first and last).
So what’s the real danger here? Well, as much as being the resident help desk for friends and family sucks…now’s when the whole “with great power…comes great responsibility” speech gets rolled out. You have to tell grandma that it’s okay for her to keep checking out your kids’ pictures online. You have to tell your whacked out sister in law that it’s still perfectly safe for her to shop for her herbal supplements and earth-friendly, made from recycled paper coffee cups or whatever the hell it is she’s trying to get you to buy to save the world this week. You have to tell your significant other that they can still download at their leisure from iTunes…even if you hate the music they like lately.
You have to. Because the fear that’s being generated about this is dumb.
All you have to tell people is to be smart. You tell them that they don’t click on links in emails that say they’re coming from your bank, or your credit card company, or anything else. You show them how to make bookmarks for all of their key sites. You make sure they have some decent anti-virus and anti-phishing software and tools up, running and active at all times – yes, you lock them out of their own computer’s administrator functions if you have to. We’ve all done it, it’s okay. Sometimes you have to save people from themselves.
Remind them that a company that they’re already doing business with doesn’t need any information from them – it’s already in their system somewhere. You tell them that if they ever get an email that appears to be from them that wants information from them…they call. Or they go directly to their website and check it out.
It’s also a “teaching moment” for you security folks out there as well…rumor has it this wasn’t a failure on the system level, this may well have been caused by a compromise at the physical level – someone managed to snag someone’s credentials to gain access to the environment and systems. It’ll be interesting to see how that part plays out as the story continues to evolve.
Now…Charlie Sheen. Or, as he likes to be known now, @charliesheen Thankfully, I had too much going on in my life and had to back out of showing up at that train wreck of a show, but I know plenty of people that were there…and the word “sucked” apparently doesn’t even begin to describe things. He rambled. He babbled. He was completely incoherent.
Not that any of that should have surprised anyone – he’s been rambling, babbling and incoherent on his live webcasts, so why would he be any less so in person?
Oh, but wait…he was different…in Chicago…for his next show…after Detroit basically told him to go screw himself by booing him offstage and walking out. He’s been talking smack about Detroit ever since. About how much the town sucks. Telling fans in Chicago “don’t be Detroit”. He apparently even opened his show in Chicago with a poem bashing Detroit…and now…after talking trash about us for a week, he apparently thinks we’re all dumb enough to hop back on his #losing bandwagon and give him yet another shot.
You like poems, Charlie? Here’s one for you:
Sorry Charlie, you’re out of luck
The Motor City doesn’t give a f…
The sad thing is that he’s a great actor who’s just spiraled completely out of control and needs to get himself put back together again. Go get put back together, issue long and flowery apologies to CBS, Chuck Lorre, the city of Detroit and everyone who attended your show (oh, and take Alec Baldwin’s advice – buy Jon Cryer a car. A really nice car) …and then maybe we can talk.
Maybe.
Now an event that you will want to be at is our Pink Slip Party on April 21st over at the Post Bar in Novi. Lots of fun stuff shaping up for it…but we’ll start dropping more information out about that in the coming weeks. Just know that you’re going to want to be there.
And speaking of a Pink Slip Party…jobs. Pages and pages of jobs sitting in our LinkedIn group currently…here’s a sampling of what’s there:
