As you know from some of my previous ramblings, I tend to spend a good bit of time reflecting on past events and their effects on where I am today.
Today is Pearl Harbor Day.
Pearl Harbor Day…a day, as they say, that will live in infamy.
I bet you knew that though. But I bet you didn’t know that it has relevance to this group as well…
See, it was on this very day back in 1995 that a geek living in Washington D.C. who had just gotten out of a long term relationship that ended rather messily hopped into the Sci-Fi/Fantasy Forum on Compuserv for the very first time and started talking about Star Wars with the other geeks he found there. Little did he know that this simple act would lead to his relocation to Michigan a mere three months later for a girl he’d met online (yes, long before eHarmony, there were those of us that were insane enough to meet people online anyway…and yes, I’ve always been retardedly impulsive), a marriage just six months later, and within a couple of years he’d start getting cold calls from a pushy sales guy who liked beer and wind up working with a “Staff Development Manager” (we called them camp counselors…same concept) with a level head and a knack for reasoning.
So while the events of 70 years ago had a far bigger national reach…it’s that simple act from 16 years ago that ultimately led to my involvement with ITintheD.com. And even though that first marriage is as gone as Compuserv, it was that chain of events that brought me here. Never regret where you’ve been, because it’s brought you to where you are…and where you are is where you’re supposed to be at that moment.
And where we are at this moment is pretty cool.
We’re a week away from our event on Thursday, December 15th at Dragonmead Brewery in Warren. An event that, as you surely know by now, not only serves as our year-end wrap up and casual drinkfe…uhh, casual networking event…but also brings us together to help some local Michigan military families.
So what should you know heading into next Thursday night? Well, as always, we’ve gotcha covered.
The event listing is out on our site at http://www.ITinTheD.com/meet/
The event listing is also out on LinkedIn at http://linkd.in/udhZAL
The “basics” are in the event listing, but we’ve given you some more details as well. Those can be found…
– In a post about how you accomplished the impossible, and rendered me speechless. That’s over here at http://www.ITinTheD.com/2689/support-michigan-military-families/
– Just to be safe, because a fair number of people had questions, we even created an FAQ doc for the event. That can also be found on our site over at http://www.ITinTheD.com/2735/dec-15-faqs/
Please read them, particularly the FAQ.
We’re very excited about this event.
We were also excited about MEDC inviting us to speak at their Shifting Gears reunion event downtown at TechTown last Friday night. We gave our usual presentation on the 10 Commandments of Networking and then had a great Q&A session and conversations with people afterwards. Huge thanks to the MEDC and TechTown for letting us take part in their event.
In case you missed it, we updated the 10 Commandments of Networking. It was time. So, head on over to http://www.ITinTheD.com/2697/the-new-and-improved-10-commandments-of-networking/ and check ’em out. We think you’ll like the improvements.
As always, consider this your reminder to hop into our LinkedIn group over at http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=91763 to check out some great discussions and jobs posted.
But really, the critical thing we want you to take away here is the event next Thursday night. Go read those FAQs at http://www.ITinTheD.com/2735/dec-15-faqs/ and then we look forward to seeing you there next Thursday night!
Regards,
Bob, Dave and Jeff
