Hey folks! This week we’ve got jobs, spammers, an upcoming event and an impending milestone.
First off, we’re two weeks away from our next casual networking event in the back room of the BlackFinn in Royal Oak. For the new folks to the group who may have come to last month’s Pink Slip Party for a “first time event”, our casual events are just that – casual. No name tags, no registration tables, and just a great, casual atmosphere to help promote building some solid connections in the IT industry.
For details and further information, you can check out…

The event listing on our site: http://www.ITinTheD.com/event/november-social-happy-hour-networking-for-the-metro-detroit-it-industry/
…and that’ll show you time, the address and other information that you may need to get you there. As with all of our events, these casual get togethers are always free, never sponsored, and really just dedicated to help promoting stronger relationships in the metro Detroit IT community.
Speaking of always free and never sponsored…let’s talk about spammers for a moment. It was brought to our attention earlier this week that some carpetbaggers trying to pimp their own networking event took advantage of our good nature (“we hadn’t banned them from our LinkedIn group yet because we try to play nice until we shouldn’t any more“) by sending spam out to members of our group. For those unfamiliar with the term “carpetbagger”…they’re someone that comes in from out of town to take your money with promises of making things better for you. And they’re from out of town (LA), and want to take your money. In case you didn’t know, by default, when you join a group, LinkedIn’s settings allow other members of the same group to send you emails – which is a good thing, really, because it promotes communication – but like all good things, some people just don’t know how to play nice in the sandbox and try to pervert it for their own gain. And make no mistake about it – it’s all about “gain”. They want you to pay $10 to $20 to show up at a bar and talk with people. And what kind of people? Well, I’ve yet to hit one of their events, but from the feedback I’ve received it seems like they’re chock full of the bottom feeders you’d expect at a “pay-for-play” event – insurance salesmen, “give me your 401k to manage” guy, MLM guy (http://www.ITinTheD.com/935/multi-level-marketing-guy/), and everyone else that we don’t let in our events. And they have to be somewhere, I suppose…but please, don’t be fooled into thinking that it’s anything other than what it really is. They got a casual mention in Through The Looking Glass (http://www.ITinTheD.com/887/through-the-looking-glass/) for a reason, and there’s a discussion on the topic going on in our LinkedIn group at the moment if you want to check it out and chime in. Job fairs suck, but people looking to take advantage of those that need help suck more.
The moral of the story here is that if you ever get a random spam email from someone via LinkedIn, and your only connection to them is through our group…let us know. We’re more than happy to kick them to the curb to keep the situation from happening again.
And no, we’re not an “jobs” yet. One more thing to go – a milestone.
On the topic of our LinkedIn group…as I sit here writing this update, we’re at 1,988 (we lost two when I banned the two guys for spamming) members in it. Almost 2,000 people…all in and around the metro Detroit IT industry. Back in May, It’s All About Perspective (http://www.ITinTheD.com/631/its-all-about-perspective/) got published as we were at the one-year mark since our first Pink Slip Party…and things have continued to grow, expand and evolve since then as well. From Bob, myself and Jeff…sincerely, “thank you”. Thank you to all of the recruiters that come to our events to help people find jobs. Thank you to the job seekers that show up hoping our group can help. Thank you to the folks just looking to expand their network of contacts in the metro Detroit IT community. We couldn’t possibly be happier with how things have developed, and we’re really looking forward to 2011.
Okay…now we can get to jobs. 🙂
