An old school pop culture reference…and one that’s even appropriate for this time of year.
And it’s true.
Because we’re going to be busy…Busy…BUSY…
We’ve got a lot going on in the coming weeks (and months), but we want to make sure we hammer home a few key points.
If you want to come meet us for a quick drink on Thursday, then you absolutely should. The three of us decided it would be a good idea to chill and have a beer or two to commemorate the 5 year anniversary of ITintheD.com getting slightly more serious. If you’re free and want to pop in, totally cool. If you’re not or can’t or don’t want to…also totally cool. Details here: http://www.ITinTheD.com/event/dec-2007-2012/
A nice write up for next week’s event is live on CBS Detroit. You can read that over here: http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2012/12/02/ITintheD-org-sets-event-to-gather-electronics-goodies-for-troops-overseas/, and then catch up on the details for next Thursday here: http://www.ITinTheD.com/event/december-2012/
Those are the two biggies, and next week’s event is where I’m hoping everyone’s focus is at. We’re really looking forward to it, particularly since some of the folks that our donations made their way to are going to be showing up that night.
We also just announced that we’re taking over the new Club 300 Party Suite at the Palace of Auburn Hills for Star Wars Night. Yes, Star Wars Night. Yes, at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Yes, that means that there’s a basketball game going on. No, that doesn’t mean you have to pay attention to it. It’s STAR WARS NIGHT for crying out loud. Read up on that here: http://www.ITinTheD.com/4631/we-would-be-honored-if-you-would-join-us/
So get out there and get those tickets, peeps. We’re only “taking it over” if enough people buy tickets to lock it down for our exclusive use…otherwise we have to share. And who wants that?!
But, most importantly…we have Thursday night and next Thursday night to worry about in the immediate future.
Hope to see you at those two events, and remember – read those Frequently Asked Questions for next Thursday night: http://www.ITinTheD.com/4556/dec-13-2012-faqs/
Yes, there’s plenty of IT in the D stuff going on. The contest to help us lose the egg is live: http://www.ITinTheD.com/4581/help-it-in-the-d-lose-the-egg/. The Justice League Discount Double Check is still in effect: http://www.ITinTheD.com/4575/justice-league-recap/ if you want to take $20 off the cost of picking up tickets.
And I wish we could be completely “open book” about everything we have going on right now, but there’s some really cool stuff that’s going to drop in the not-too-distant future that…between you, me, and the internet…it would probably be a good idea for you to stop pondering sponsoring IT in the D and getting on board, already.
Every now and then, you just have to trust us.
Speaking of trust, you should probably trust the advice in The Recruiter Strikes Back 3: The Hits Just Keep On Coming over at http://www.ITinTheD.com/1787/the-recruiter-strikes-back-3-the-hits-just-keep-on-coming/ because that’s advice coming straight from someone who you may well encounter during your job search – a recruiter who helps people find jobs.
Another oldie but goodie popped up, and that’s our International Prune Your Network Day out at http://www.ITinTheD.com/2498/international-prune-your-network-day/. Because your network really is like a plant, shrub or tree in your front yard…sometimes you have to chop off the dead or diseased branches in order to make sure it survives as a whole.
“Chopping things off” segues nicely into why LinkedIn sucks. Well, why LinkedIn sucks more than usual, I suppose. Events are gone, and we’re none too thrilled about it: http://www.ITinTheD.com/4563/linkedin-sucks-chapter-12/
That doesn’t mean our LinkedIn group has gone away or anything though, and so you might want to check out some of these conversations taking place:
– 5 embarrassing “first world career problems”: http://lnkd.in/bW-K7u
– Is college really worth it? http://lnkd.in/ar_byA
– Can you take a 2nd run at a company that turned you down before? http://lnkd.in/Gmx_Sb
– Reverse writing your resume: http://lnkd.in/kD5NRW
– Are the holidays, in fact, a great time to find a job? http://lnkd.in/Cfm8DG
– 5 ways for introverts to build personal brands: http://lnkd.in/hPRJYa
…and there’s more. With more than 3800 members…all in/around the information technology industry, all in/around metro Detroit…you can’t beat this group for a targeted demographic. Check it out at http://www.linkedin.com/groups/ITintheDorg-Detroit-Networking-Events-IT-91763
Now, there are also always jobs popped out there at http://www.linkedin.com/groups?careerDiscussion=&gid=91763 as well.
On a personal front, I happen to know recruiters who are looking extremely hard and heavy for both experienced front end designers with some HTML5 / heavy javascript library experience and network engineers. If you’re looking, drop me a note and I’ll make some introductions.
We also made contact with a really cool trio of ladies involved with Girl Develop It – Detroit. We all know (or should) how much of a pain in the ass it can be for women to get or be in the technology industry. From the early years of being told that it’s “not for girls” to dealing with jackholes like “Creepy Guy” to just not even being factored into the equation when it comes to workshops and conferences…it’s not the easiest path to follow. Well, these three ladies are looking to change that, or at least make a difference and help, and we’re looking to help them.
So here’s what I want you to do:
– Know someone who would be interested in taking one of the classes they provide? Help make it happen. Put them in touch with Michelle, Erika or Cara Jo, and get things rolling.
– Got a subject you can teach? Drop them a note and let them know what you’ve got to offer.
– If you’re a recruiter that deals with places who hire or bring in entry-level web designers with enough knowledge to be dangerous and a little experience under their belt with a huge hunger to learn more…then consider them a goldmine and your new best friends. You’re welcome.
They’re located at http://girldevelopit.com/chapters/detroit
Now, as far as jobs in the group go, here’s some of what’s out there right now:
